A 25-year-old woman was allegedly murdered in a flat in Guwahati’s Basisthapur area, with her severed head found wrapped in a polythene bag inside a refrigerator, police said on Monday. The victim has been identified as Riya Talukdar Goswami.
The gruesome crime came to light after neighbours reportedly noticed a foul smell coming from the apartment. Police reached the residence and recovered the woman’s body, while her head was found inside the refrigerator. Her fingers were also allegedly cut off.
Police said the murder is believed to have taken place around 24 to 48 hours before the body was discovered. A sharp weapon suspected to have been used in the crime was also recovered from the premises, and forensic teams are examining the flat for further evidence.
Riya’s husband, Ramanujan Goswami, has been identified as the prime accused. According to Guwahati Police, he surrendered and was taken into custody. Anurag Sharma, ADCP (East) of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate, confirmed the development.
The couple had reportedly been married for around six months and were living together in the flat. Riya worked at a boutique in the AC Market area of Fancy Bazar, while Goswami reportedly worked as an Uber driver.
The victim’s body has been sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for post-mortem examination. Police and forensic teams are reconstructing the sequence of events, while the exact motive behind the alleged murder remains under investigation.
A police official said, “The murder took place 24 to 48 hours ago as the body had started decomposing.”
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities questioning the accused and examining evidence recovered from the apartment.
