A Class 11 student from a government school in Siliguri has been detained after allegedly posting a social media reel containing objectionable remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and his mother, police said. The minor was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board on Wednesday, while police launched an investigation into the incident and a separate viral video purportedly showing a photograph of the Chief Minister being desecrated.
According to police, the student, a resident of Suryasen Colony under Ward No. 34 of the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, allegedly made the remarks while recording a reel with friends. The video subsequently went viral on social media, sparking outrage.
"The student allegedly made objectionable remarks against the Chief Minister and his mother while recording a social media reel with friends," police said.
Following the circulation of the video, a group of local residents, along with some BJP supporters, allegedly gathered outside the student's residence on Tuesday night.
According to police, the situation turned tense after the student was allegedly pelted with eggs and assaulted by members of the crowd.
Personnel from New Jalpaiguri Police Station reached the spot, rescued the student and took him into custody to prevent any further escalation.
As the accused is a minor, police produced him before the Juvenile Justice Board on Wednesday. His identity has not been disclosed in accordance with provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act.
"Since the accused is a minor, his identity is being withheld as per law," police said.
Meanwhile, another video has surfaced on social media allegedly showing a person urinating on a photograph of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari inside a school premises.
Police said they are verifying the authenticity of the video and examining whether it is connected to the same incident.
"Police are examining the authenticity of the viral video and investigating all aspects of the incident," officials said.
The investigation is ongoing, and police said appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
