A war of words has erupted on social media following the Election Commission of India’s interim decision on the dispute over the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC)’s name and election symbol, with BJP leader Keya Ghosh sharply attacking CJP co-convenor Saurav Das over his comments on the poll panel.
Das had criticised the Election Commission in a post on X, alleging that the poll body had become a “government stooge” and adding, “Time for its Commissioners to pay is coming very soon.”
His remarks came after the Commission barred both rival factions of the AITC from using the party’s existing name and symbol pending a substantive determination of the dispute.
Reacting to the post, Ghosh wrote on X: “I am appalled by his audacity! Who does he think he is? Dear @ECISVEEP, how could you allow these chhapris to threat you?”
Ghosh’s response adds another layer to the increasingly heated political and social-media exchanges surrounding the Election Commission’s interim order.
The Commission has said that rival groups led by Mamata Banerjee and Arup Roy are both claiming the AITC identity i.e. the ‘twin flower’ or ‘jarful’ symbol, and that the matter requires substantive determination under the Election Symbols (Reservation & Allotment) Order, 1968.
The controversy follows the Election Commission’s decision to temporarily prevent both factions from using the name “All India Trinamool Congress” and the party’s existing symbol for the purposes covered by the interim order. The Commission said the arrangement was intended to place the rival groups on an “even keel” while protecting their respective interests until a final decision on the dispute.
