Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani on Thursday announced plans to invest ₹1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035, outlining investment opportunities across infrastructure, power, roads, bridges and other sectors. The announcement was made during the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the proposed 2,000-bed Adani Arogya Mandir hospital and medical college in New Town, in the presence of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

The proposed hospital, which will include a medical college and research centre, is expected to involve an investment of around ₹4,000 crore. Adani said the project would provide advanced healthcare facilities and generate employment opportunities in the state.

Addressing the gathering, Adani described West Bengal as his second “workplace” after Gujarat and said the state offered significant opportunities for investment.

“After Gujarat, West Bengal is my second workplace. There are enormous opportunities waiting here. I bow to the soil of Bengal. I bow to Kolkata,” Adani said.

He also expressed confidence in the state's development under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

“Under the leadership of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Bengal will move forward. Many possibilities will emerge in Bengal under his leadership,” he said.

Adani began his address in Bengali, greeting the audience with “Namaskar” and paying tribute to Kolkata and the soil of Bengal. His speech also referred to the state's historical legacy, cultural heritage and contributions of its prominent personalities.

₹4,000 Crore Hospital to Have 2,000 Beds

The Adani Arogya Mandir project is coming up on approximately 52 acres of land in New Town's Action Area II. The proposed facility will have 2,000 beds, alongside a medical college and a research centre.

Adani described the hospital as a not-for-profit healthcare initiative and said it would focus on making advanced medical treatment accessible to economically weaker sections.

Of the 2,000 beds, 1,000 will be reserved for economically disadvantaged patients, who will be eligible for treatment through state or central government health insurance schemes, he announced.

The project is expected to create around 10,000 direct employment opportunities, according to Adani's announcement. The state government has indicated that the hospital complex is expected to be completed within three years.

Adani said the healthcare initiative was part of the group's broader investment plans for West Bengal, adding that the state's geographical position made it an important location for infrastructure and industrial development.

He pointed out that West Bengal serves as a gateway to the northeastern states and provides maritime connectivity with Southeast Asia.

Investment Plans Across Infrastructure Sectors

Beyond healthcare, Adani expressed interest in investing in several infrastructure-related sectors, including electricity generation and distribution, roads and bridges.

The group has outlined an investment target of ₹1 lakh crore across sectors in West Bengal by 2035. The proposed investments are expected to cover ports, logistics, power generation, roads and data centres, among other areas.

“Gujarat's Mundra Port was my first workplace. Now, Bengal is my second workplace,” Adani said, reiterating his commitment to the state.

The proposed investment programme comes amid the West Bengal government's efforts to attract industrial investment and expand employment opportunities.

The Adani Group is also associated with proposed heritage and urban redevelopment initiatives in the state, including the restoration of Writers' Buildings and the redevelopment of Kumartuli Ghat.

The state government has signed memorandums of understanding with the group concerning the heritage-related projects.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, addressing the gathering, thanked Adani for the investment commitment and sought the group's participation in the state's infrastructure development.

Adhikari described the New Town hospital as a comprehensive “medicity” project rather than an isolated healthcare facility, highlighting the proposed integration of medical services, education and research.

He also said the state would seek support from the Adani Group to promote Durga Puja on the global stage.
