Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee on Friday addressed questions surrounding the visit of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials to his south Kolkata residence earlier in the day, saying he had no information about the purpose of their visit.

The development came hours after a CID team reportedly reached Banerjee’s Harish Mukherjee Road residence, 188/A Shantiniketan. Staff members at the house informed the officers that the TMC leader was not present at the time. The visit triggered speculation in political circles, particularly because no official explanation was immediately provided by the investigating agency.

After returning to his Kalighat residence later in the day, Banerjee spoke briefly to reporters and said he was unaware of the reason behind the CID team’s arrival. He indicated that he had not yet received any formal communication from the agency regarding the matter.

Sources suggested that the visit could be linked to an ongoing inquiry into alleged discrepancies in signatures on a letter submitted by the Trinamool Congress legislative party to the West Bengal Assembly. The letter, signed in Banerjee’s capacity as the party’s national general secretary, was part of the process of notifying Assembly authorities about appointments to key legislative posts.

The CID has been assisting in the inquiry after questions were raised regarding the authenticity of signatures appearing on the document. As part of the investigation, officials have reportedly visited the residences of several Trinamool leaders and legislators in recent days.

Despite growing speculation, neither the CID nor the state government has issued a detailed statement explaining the purpose of Friday’s visit to Banerjee’s residence.

The TMC MP has been summoned by CID. He has been asked to appear at Bhavani Bhavan on Monday around 12 noon.
