Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday distributed more than 51,000 appointment letters to newly recruited candidates during the 19th edition of the Rozgar Mela, asserting that the world is increasingly looking to become part of India’s “Vikas Yatra” or development journey.

Addressing candidates through video conferencing, Modi said India’s rapid progress in infrastructure, digital technology, innovation and economic growth has transformed the country into a major global centre of opportunity. He added that India’s youth are emerging as central contributors to the nation’s long-term development ambitions.

“Today, more than 51,000 youth have received appointment letters for government jobs and all of you are becoming key partners in the ‘Vikas Yatra’ of the nation,” the Prime Minister said during his virtual address.

The Rozgar Mela was conducted simultaneously at 47 locations across the country as part of the Centre’s ongoing employment generation initiative aimed at accelerating recruitment across government departments and public institutions. The newly recruited candidates are expected to join various ministries and departments, including Railways, Home Affairs, Health and Family Welfare, Financial Services and Higher Education.

Congratulating the selected candidates and their families, Modi said the achievement reflected years of dedication and preparation. He also emphasised the role played by society and the country as a whole in shaping the success of young citizens.

“To reach this point, all of you must have done a lot of preparation and hard work. I congratulate you and your family on this achievement,” Modi said. “We do not reach here only because of ourselves or only because of our families. The contribution of 140 crore citizens of this great nation is also very significant.”

The Prime Minister linked the recruitment drive to the government’s broader “Viksit Bharat” vision, under which India aims to become a developed nation by 2047. According to Modi, the country’s young workforce will play a decisive role in achieving that target by contributing to governance, innovation, entrepreneurship and economic expansion.

He further claimed that India’s development trajectory is attracting increasing international attention. “The world today is excited about India’s progress and wants to be a partner in India’s growth journey,” Modi said, pointing to the country’s advances in digital public infrastructure, manufacturing, startups and emerging technologies.

Government officials described the Rozgar Mela as part of a larger effort to streamline public sector hiring and create employment opportunities for young people at a time when job creation continues to remain a politically sensitive issue.

According to figures released by the Prime Minister’s Office, nearly 12 lakh appointment letters have been distributed through 18 Rozgar Melas organised so far across the country.

The initiative was launched by the Centre to fast-track recruitment in government departments and reduce vacancies across public institutions. Officials said the programme also aims to improve administrative efficiency while providing stable employment opportunities to the youth.

The event comes amid continuing political debate over unemployment and job creation in India. Opposition parties have repeatedly questioned the government’s employment record and accused it of failing to generate sufficient jobs despite high economic growth claims. The BJP, however, has maintained that large-scale recruitment drives, startup growth and infrastructure expansion are creating new opportunities across sectors.

Analysts note that the Rozgar Mela has increasingly become both an administrative exercise and a political messaging platform for the government, allowing it to highlight employment initiatives while reinforcing its larger narrative around economic development and youth empowerment.
